JEDEC: Focus on DDR-II Graphics Cards
Despite the fact that the meetings of the JEDEC committees on working with draft versions of standards are closed, confidential, some rumors have leaked to the press that at the current quarterly session of the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, a preliminary version of the specifications for the graphics version of the DDR memory standard is in full swing. II.
The current promotion of the graphics version of the DDR-II standard in JEDEC comes at a time when most memory manufacturers have just finished developing their DDR-II chips. Currently, only Samsung Electronics supplies samples of its DDR-II chips with a bandwidth of 533 Mbps for graphics devices. Elpida has already unveiled its 512 Mbit DDR-II chips for PCs, however, has not yet announced the availability of a version for graphics cards. The rest of the DRAM manufacturers intend to present samples of DDR-II graphics memory only at the beginning of 2021.
On the other hand, graphics card manufacturers claim that the launch of DDR-II graphics cards is delayed only due to lack of memory on the market. According to ATI representatives, the company already has a ready-made memory controller design that supports DDR-II.
DDR-II could spur graphics card sales further, according to leading analysts. According to them, DDR-II will become the dominant type of memory for graphics cards by the third quarter of 2021.
However, despite the fact that manufacturers of graphic cards and chips are very interested in the adoption of the graphic version of the DDR-II standard in the very near future, sources in JEDEC are skeptical about the quick solution of this issue and believe that the adoption of the new standard in the final version will take place only in early 2021.
According to preliminary data, ATI Technology and NVIDIA intend to present versions of their graphics chips with support for DDR-II without waiting for the final version of the standard to be adopted by JEDEC.
