New electroluminescent material with green and red glow
The journal Nature, dated January 2, published an article on the invention by Philips and the University of Amsterdam of the first electroluminescent material capable of emitting red or green light, depending on the voltage applied to it.
As you know, electroluminescent (EL) materials usually emit light of a fixed color, determined by the energy of the excited state of the material. Unlike typical cases, the new material is capable of glowing in two colors, depending on the direction of flow of the current applied to it. The new material is a homogeneous (homogeneous) mixture of a semiconducting polymer (derived from polyphenylenevinylene – polyphenylenevinylene, PPV) and dispersed elements of a complex compound of diatomic ruthenium (dinuclear ruthenium complex), each of which has a different excited state energy. If a layer of such material is placed between two electrodes made of different materials – gold and ITO (indium tin oxide, indium and tin oxides), when a positive potential is applied to the ITO electrode (forward bias, +4 V), the light emission effect is generated due to the presence of a complex compounds of metals, while a red glow appears. When a reverse bias is applied (-4 V), the direction of the current flow changes, in this case, an excitation state for the semiconducting polymer occurs and the radiation of the material takes on a green tint, corresponding to the energy zone of the polymer.
According to scientists, the use of such a material in the production of full-color displays will allow the use of only two components to form a pixel, instead of three used in traditional displays, which can significantly affect the production cost. Moreover, the new material has an increased luminescence brightness, which can also affect the quality of new displays in a positive way.
However, according to experts from Philips, the real introduction of the new material into mass production will take place no earlier than 2021 – 2021. Initially, these will be small, full-color electroluminescent displays with a diagonal of several inches.
