Transmeta: through hardships to Astro
It seems that the Transmeta company, whose business has been more or less improving lately, has perked up a little and is again making plans for the future. At the Comdex Fall 2021 exhibition currently taking place in Las Vegas, a conference was held, during which company representatives spoke about plans to release a new Astro processor in 2021.
To be consistent, the name of the processor – Astro, can be called a replacement for the earlier (and at one time even thrown out of the company’s roadmap) TM8000 processor. By the way, the name of its new processor (no kidding!) received in honor of the famous dog Astro from the famous animated series about the Jetsons family (The Jetsons). If someone can’t remember this, I think this screenshot will refresh your memories:
The main difference between the Astro (TM8000) series chips from the current Crusoe TM5x00 series is that they will have a 256-bit internal data representation and will be able to execute up to eight instructions per cycle, unlike their predecessors with a 128-bit internal representation and four instructions per clock cycle. Astro’s mass appearance is scheduled for mid-2021, the chip will be produced at TSMC facilities in compliance with the 0.13 micron manufacturing process, TM8000 laptops will hit the market in the third quarter of 2021. Along with lower power consumption, company officials promise significant performance gains for the Astro over the Crusoe TM5800 at a lower cost. The TM6000 chips will be released in the same BGA package as the current TM5800, however, the die size will increase slightly due to additional transistors, mainly in the registers.
According to Transmeta representatives, the new chip will not compete much or less, namely with the new Intel Banias processors, however, keeping silent about the performance, the company representatives spoke more about price competition. Unfortunately, the photos of the new TM8000 chip and the reference board with it were never shown, however, the company representatives said that the Astro prototype was compared in tests with a Sony VAIO GRX laptop with a 1.8 GHz Mobile Pentium 4-M processor and in boot mode Windows performed better. It sounds tempting, there are no words, however, for final assessments of Astro’s capabilities, we’d better wait for more significant data from Transmeta.
