DDR400 will be discussed at the September JEDEC Forum in Vancouver

The future of DDR400… what are the prospects of this still not standardized memory type? The respected online source EE Times has published a note summarizing all the facts currently known about the fate of DDR400. Here’s what happened:

  • Currently, three suppliers of memory chips – Nanya Technology, Samsung Electronics and Winbond Electronics – are already mass-producing DDR400 SDRAM chips
  • Micron intends to launch its own DDR400 products towards the end of the year
  • Elpida Memory and Infineon Technologies still look at DDR400 with disbelief and believe that it would be more reasonable to switch from DDR333 SDRAM directly to DDR-II at the beginning of 2021, for which they are intensively preparing
  • Chipset makers SiS, NVIDIA and Via Technologies have already announced their DDR400 chipsets
  • Currently, since JEDEC still has not been clear about DDR400 standardization, memory, chipset and motherboard vendors are organizing independent certification programs. The main goal of such programs, according to Western analysts, is the desire of manufacturers of systems with DDR400 support to differentiate their hi-end systems against the background of well-known brands. If this movement gets widespread enough, it is quite possible that leading motherboard manufacturers will support DDR400 even without JEDEC certification
  • DDR400 is actively discussed on the sidelines of JEDEC. The upcoming September JEDEC conference in Vancouver, BC is expected to take center stage on the adoption of DDR400 as a standard
  • Intel’s latest roadmaps indicate unambiguously that the company intends to bypass DDR400 to move from DDR333 support directly to DDR-II
  • Analysts say: DDR400 will become a mainstream product in the only case: if it is supported by Intel
