ThinkVantage, BlueBoard and Millipede: IBM’s three trump cards
At a press conference on Monday, IBM’s Personal Computing Division showed off some of the details of the technologies the company intends to use in future products, such as ThinkVantage, aimed at reducing the cost of configuring, upgrading and repairing PCs.
First of all, IBM wants to reduce the cost of ownership of companies, which consists of 20% in hardware acquisition costs and 80% in support and maintenance costs. ThinkVantage consists of the following core tools: RapidRestore for fast recovery of corrupted data due to software failure, Embedded Security subsystem for secure storage, Access Connections for configuring the system for wireless or NAN, ImageUltra Builder for reducing the total number of mirroring files on the hard drive PC, System Migration for important files and data migration and IBM Access for IBM technical support calls.
In addition, among the new technologies is BlueBoard, a connection management interface that, if described in a simplified way, uses two basic principles: point-and-click and drag-and-drop. Interestingly, IBM in the not so distant future is going to release special glasses with BlueBoard, which track the position of the pupil of the eye and automatically select the object on which the user’s pupil is fixed.
IBM also has some thoughts on the future of its new Millipede technology. The company reports that the chips, which have already reached a recording density of 400 Gb / sq. inch will be commercialized within two to three years.
