VIA EPIA-M: the next generation of Mini-ITX multimedia platforms

Today VIA Technologies has officially presented a new generation Mini-ITX solution – VIA EPIA-M motherboard. The new board is made on the VIA Apollo CLE266 chipset and, according to the company’s plan, will become the main one for home multimedia solutions. VIA EPIA M-Series Mini-ITX measures 170 x 170 mm, optimized for modern digital video and audio applications, compatible with Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. The board comes with an integrated VIA Eden ESP processor for fanless quiet systems, or an integrated VIA C3 E processor for more demanding digital media applications.

Our readers are already familiar with the capabilities of the company’s previous Mini-ITX platform – VIA EPIA, described in our article Using the VIA Eden platform. The capabilities of the previous generation of Mini-ITX boards from VIA, alas, were not enough in some cases. VIA EPIA M uses the new VIA Apollo CLE266 chipset with an integrated MPEG-2 decoder, a new integrated 2D / 3D graphics core, support for DDR266 SDRAM, ATA / 133 interface, and 5.1-channel AC’97 codec VIA VT1616, designed by the company to provide a sufficient level of performance required to work with the most popular multimedia applications. In addition, the board supports IEEE 1394 and USB 2 ports.0, S-Video and RCA TV-Out (NTSC & PAL) interfaces, 10/100 Ethernet LAN; the presence of an integrated LVDS transceiver allows you to support LCD monitors, a PCI slot allows you to use additional expansion cards. VIA EPIA M is compatible with the full range of Mini-ITX chassis, as well as FlexATX and MicroATX chassis.

Of course, the real capabilities of the new board can only be assessed
after a series of tests, one of our upcoming articles will be devoted to this. It only remains to add that VIA EPIA M series Mini-ITX motherboards are already available through the VPSD distribution network. The planned retail price of VIA EPIA M9000 (933 MHz VIA C3 EBGA processor) and EPIA ME6000 (600 MHz VIA EDEN ESP6000 EBGA processor) is below $ 150.
