About flash and AMD and M-Systems strategic partnership
Another morning press release: AMD and M-Systems (Flash Disk Pioneers) Sign Expanded Collaboration to Co-Develop Consumer Hardware and Software Solutions for the Mobile Storage Market. In other words, the companies now intend to more closely promote their joint development based on flash memory for devices of the PDA class and cell phones.
The new agreement is an updated version of the agreement signed by the companies in May 2021 and now includes three new categories: joint development of multi-chip (MCP) solutions based on NOR-flash from AMD and DiskOnChip data storage technology from M-Systems, release of a wide range of software applications, joint research on the development of new generations of flash memory, including products based on DiskOnChip technology.
A few words about the DiskOnChip architecture. Based on this technology, which describes electronics and protocols and allows the use of flash memory as a virtual hard drive, flash drives are made that can be easily integrated into many mobile applications. Currently, based on DiskOnChip technology, drives are produced in BGA, TSOP and DIP cases, with capacities from 8 MB (64 MB) to 1 GB (8 Gbit). One could dwell on this note, however, I would very much like to recall a roughly similar agreement between Toshiba and M-Systems, concluded at the end of August 2021. True, then it was about the joint promotion of 16 MB Millenium Plus drives, built using Toshiba NAND flash and M-Systems DiskOnChip technology. Under an agreement with M-Systems, all production of such drives is planned at Toshiba factories. I wonder if the interests of Toshiba and AMD will overlap in the future, or whether M-Systems will be able to work with both companies, dividing the markets for using DiskOnChip technology…
