Philips Semiconductors adopts 0.12-micron process technology
Philips Semiconductors announces the start of commercial production of SoC-chips (SoC – system-on-chip, system-on-a-chip) according to the norms of 0.12-micron CMOS12 (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) process technology.
The CMOS12 process is quite similar to TSMC’s 0.13-micron process called CL013G, and Philips confirmed that the technology was developed at TSMC factories and the joint venture STMicroelectronic, Philips and Motorola, Crolles2. The most sophisticated Philips SoC yet manufactured by TSMC contains multiple signal processors and 9 Mbit of static RAM.
This chip, according to Philips, is intended for use in telecommunications, however, the name of the customer has not yet been disclosed. Although the chip is designed exclusively for digital signal processing, it contains many analog modules.
Philips does not seek to use low-k dielectric film in its process, but instead uses fluorinated silica glass (FSG), deposited in the process of chemical substitution of atoms in vapors.
