Intel raises prices for flash memory chips
While AMD and Fujitsu are in talks to merge the flash chip divisions, Intel, sources say, is set to raise flash prices by 20-40% starting January 1 next year. Intel’s Taiwan-based distributor WPI may also influence other vendors to create an overall price increase trend. Intel backs up its decision with a strong forecast for the growth rate of the non-volatile memory market.
Intel’s Taiwan office confirms the planned price increase, which is also caused by the expected high demand for mobile phones, pocket PCs and desktop (gaming and not so) consoles.
According to WPI, Intel predicts a significant backlog of supply from demand for flash memory in 2021, and if so, the company did not fail to seize the opportunity to raise prices for its products.
