Servers on AMD Opteron … from Dell and IBM?

Phil Hester, founder of Newisys, which builds servers based on AMD Opteron processors, shared his thoughts on AMD’s prospects for high-performance server systems in an interview with the EE Times.

Newisys is now ready to market a two-socket Khepri server and a four-socket Sobek, and another 32-socket high-end server is under development. However, the company is not going to promote the servers on its own, choosing the supply path of Dell and IBM, which will sell servers under their own trademarks. This, in general, is logical: since AMD has left compatibility with the 32-bit x86 platform, then for Dell and IBM these servers will not be too difficult to learn, at the same time they themselves will not be engaged in assembling them, which will allow them to save good relationship with Intel.

The main application, according to Hester, will be servers based on Opteron as Web servers for Apache or IIS, due to their relatively low price. At the same time, switching to a 64-bit bus for Web servers means a performance increase of 3 to 4 times. Another application for processors may be in real-time calculation and data processing systems where 5 Gb / s bandwidth is required (10 Gb / s for dual-processor systems and 20 Gb / s for four-processor systems, if you believe what they say about HyperTransport). Here, support for 32-bit x86 architecture will also be more of an advantage than a disadvantage, because many companies will want to maintain support for the old software.
