Intel and SiS are preparing B-versions of chipsets for Hyper-Threading
The Digi Times reports that Intel and SiS (Silicon Integrated Systems) have decided to release a new version of products on their chipsets with Hyper-Threading support. Pentium 4 3.06 GHz Desktop Processors Expected by Q4.
Hyper-Threading technology, which allows the system to parallelize computing processes using one physical processor as two virtual ones, is currently only used in Intel workstations and requires specific chipsets and operating systems (usually Windows NT). Hyper-Threading chipsets on the market only support 845GE and 845PE (both with DDR333 support).
To address the support issue, Intel and SiS plan to either upgrade the BIOS or release new versions of their products that support the technology.
This must be understood so that Hyper-Threading support can be enabled in 845E and 850E motherboards by simply flashing the BIOS, while an upgraded B-version will be released for the 845G. SiS, in turn, announced that it began shipping trial copies of SiS645DX and SiS648, mass shipments may begin in October.
Intel has already been reproached many times for having to change motherboards too often for new processors. Hyper-Threading will not do without it. Newer Pentium 4 3.06 GHz with support for the new technology have the same pin count, but their assignments do not match, so older boards may not be compatible with new processors. Backward compatibility (although who, by and large, needs it) will nevertheless be, and SiS is already consulting with its partners on wiring processor sockets on their boards.
In general, 3 GHz is a good thing, of course, but the turmoil on the Pentium 4 chipset market by the end of this year will, alas, only increase.
