Centrino platform, some details
A press conference was held in Tokyo today where Intel unveiled some details on the upcoming Centrino mobile platform. As you know, the main stream of details is expected now in March, during the CeBIT exhibition, however, something interesting was told by Intel representatives today.
The most interesting event of the meeting was the demonstration of the new Pentium M processor.
Here are the clarifications that today’s news brought from Japan. As we already wrote, a Centrino-branded platform can only be used for products that include three components from Intel at once and simultaneously, these are the Pentium M processor, Intel 855 chipset (see the photo – discrete version of the chipset, Intel 855PM) and wireless mini-PCI card Pro / Wireless 2100. So, everything is not so scary, according to this information, if the manufacturer for some reason decided not to use the Pro / Wireless 2100, he just loses the right to use the Centrino logo, but leaves the opportunity to mention the Pentium M brand. I think that this may seem quite enough to some. At least at first, when the “hype” of the Centrino brand had not yet reached the heights of the Pentium brand. Although, the need to use third-party wireless products may arise only in case of high prices for kits from Intel. We already wrote that some Taiwanese manufacturers are skeptical about the possible high prices for laptops, in general, due to the prices of the Centrino kit, however, what will be worse – to install a wireless module that is not certified by Intel, or still remain with the Centrino brand – to predict difficult.
Representatives of the Japanese branch of Intel, in general, talked about the already known details of the Centrino platform: about economy mode, 1 MB L2 cache, improved implementation of the prediction engine, etc. It was much more interesting to find out that, for example, Intel plans to support the new high-speed wireless standard IEEE 802.11g. however, intends to await its final specifications. Moreover, it was emphasized that most likely the company will maintain a course of more extensive support for 11b, and not 11a, which is more common in the manufacturing sector, and in the future it still counts on the full use of 11g.
Regarding the prices of the new Centrino notebooks, it has been said that they will remain at about the same level as the prices of the current notebooks with Mobile Pentium 4-M processors. For example, a typical low-cost model in Japan will cost about 210 thousand. yen (about $ 1750).
By the way, when asked if the Centrino trademark is planned to be used in any other market besides the laptop market in the future, the answer was received that so far the company intends to promote this brand only in the laptop PC market, although, in the future, it is possible that under this brand of low-cost, cost-effective desktop PCs. And one more thing: regarding plans to release Celeron versions of Pentium M (that is, new chips with a cut cache), an Intel representative replied that the company does not currently have such plans.
