Line of hard drives IBM Deskstar 180GXP

It’s been just a few weeks since Western Digital and Maxtor launched their new 200 / 250GB hard drives, and today IBM has joined them in announcing the 180GB model of the IBM Deskstar 180GXP series.

The new 180 GB IBM Deskstar 180GXP hard drives are equipped with an IDE interface, fluid dynamic bearing motors (FDB), have a spindle speed of 7200 rpm, and have an 8 MB cache. In addition to 180GB drives, there will also be 30GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB and 120GB models.

Some additional specifications of the Deskstar 180GXP series hard drives:

  • Height – 25.4 mm

  • Specific recording density – 45.5 Gbps. inch
  • Number of plates: 3/2/1
  • Plates capacity: 60 GB
  • Number of heads (GMR): 6/4/2
  • Shock resistance: up to 350G (2ms) non-operating
  • Power consumption in standby mode – 7 / 5.9 / 5 W (3/2/1 plate)
  • Data access time – 8.5 ms (3/2 plates), 8.8 ms (1 plate)
  • Interface – ATA 6 (100 Mb / s)
  • Noise performance (standby): 30/23/26 dB (3/2/1 plate)

An additional advantage of the new hard drives IBM calls a new, first used technology for transferring commands from the host controller to the hard disk – “tag ‘n seek”, which transfers each command that comes to the hard drive buffer with a specific identifier, then reorganizes and executes the commands in the most efficient order.
