GDDR-III: the new DRAM standard for graphics cards

Already in the first half of 2021, GDDR-III memory chips are expected to appear, designed for use in high-performance graphics cards.

In an interview with EBN, representatives of Micron Technology and ATI Technologies said that for the first time, GDDR-III memory chips will be able to provide linear bandwidth of 1 Gbps – 1.5 Gbps per output, which is almost twice the performance of DDR-II SDRAM, which only prepares to go mainstream next year, but proves too slow from the start for serious graphics applications. That is why, according to an ATI representative, it was decided to develop, together with DRAM manufacturers, an open GDDR-III memory standard, which, quite possibly, will exist outside the framework of the standards approved by the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association.

The main reason for the independent development of GDDR-III is that graphics card manufacturers cannot wait two to three years for JEDEC to approve a new standard, after this period “any new DRAM standard from JEDEC may become obsolete for graphics.”. The ATI spokesman also said that JEDEC is doing serious and necessary work to develop memory standards for PCs, however, they have to combine memory modules, chipsets and system interfaces, which is absolutely useless in relation to graphics memory. Moreover, the system memory standard has a life cycle of two to three years, while the graphics memory standard has a life cycle of about nine months.

The GDDR-III standard will not become something like a chip imposed by the industry with patent rights, on the contrary, all the leading DRAM manufacturers are taking part in its development and will be able to launch such chips. Both ATI and NVIDIA are involved in the development and commercialization of GDDR-III.

Micron representatives promise to start mass production of GDDR-III in the second quarter of 2021, Korean Hynix Semiconductor talks about the first half of 2021, Infineon Technologies intends to present samples of GDDR-III chips by the end of the first half of 2021 and start their mass production a little later.

Initially, GDDR-III chips are expected to have 256 Mbps capacity, 500 MHz clock speed and 1 Gbps linear bandwidth per output. Then clock speeds will rise to 750 MHz, linear bandwidth – up to 1.5 Gbps per pin. According to the manufacturers, despite the fact that the GDDR-III specifications are based on the DDR-II standard, these will be completely different chips in CSP packages (chip-scale packaging), in a 144-pin BGA configuration, as opposed to 84-pin DDR chips. -II in CSP corps.
GDDR-III I / O bus will use open drain technology (as opposed to push-pull I / O bus for PC memory), which will help to achieve faster high clock speeds and facilitate graphics card wiring. In addition, the new graphics chips will use on-die termination (ODT), tied to an open-drain design. Although both types of memory will use impedance-matching controllers, the GDDR-III will have a simpler design by using a direct chip architecture.

By the way, according to experts, GDDR-III can be used not only as memory for graphics, but also may well take root in communication devices and consumer electronics, where high-speed memory is also needed.

Meanwhile, in JEDEC, according to preliminary data, work has already begun on the specifications of the DDR-III standard for PC. According to sources from JEDEC, five DRAM manufacturers – Elpida, Hynix, Infineon, Micron and Samsung, have decided to share the main parts of the future standard and now each of them is developing draft specifications for its part. The first merging of parts of the draft specifications is expected to take place at the December quarterly meeting of JEDEC members.

The DDR-III standard within JEDEC is also aimed at achieving linear bandwidth of 1 Gbps and higher, however, many believe that GDDR-III will become a mainstream product much earlier than the release of the final version of the DDR-III standard.
