Intel is expected to unveil PCI Express Advanced Switching (PCI EAS) specifications in December. Industry sources close to this project report that at least Alcatel, EMC, Hitachi, Marconi, Nokia and Siemens intend to support the new technology.
As you know, the main focus of PCI Express technology, which is the successor to the PCI bus, is to create a simple and fast bus for the interaction of chips and computer elements, with a maximum performance of up to 2.5 Gbps. With all the similarity of the hardware implementation of PCI EAS with the requirements for PCI Express, the new technology is aimed at using not in a PC, but in communication equipment and can take the place of PCI and other connections. For the most part, the revision of PCI Express to PCI EAS will affect the software part aimed at ensuring the transfer of arrays of communication data.
The benefit of network equipment manufacturers from the support and implementation of PCI EAS is seen by developers in the possibility of reducing the cost of development and production, thanks to the use of unified nodes from Intel and other chip manufacturers, instead of developing their own, that is, thanks to a kind of standardization and unification of equipment nodes.
