The science behind the health of motorists: car airbags are even safer

The development of an interesting technology is reported by the Analog Components division of Motorola: a non-contact sensor that determines the size and position of a person at a certain (rather short) distance. Initially, the technology was developed to determine the response time of car airbags and the appropriateness of their use if the passenger is a child or a small person. However, there are other potential applications of the technology in the growing security market.

From a technical point of view, there is nothing particularly outstanding about Motorola’s technology. However, there are several interesting points in the implementation: firstly, a slightly modified capacitive sensor is used to determine the location of the human body, which responds to a weak disturbance of the electric field of the sensor antennas caused by a warm human body, and secondly, the sensor allows you to determine not only the location of a person, but also the location of the limbs relative to the body.

Motorola and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) worked together to develop a technology that allows determining the position of limbs relative to the human body. Elesys North America (formerly NEC Technologies Automotive Electronics Division) also participated in the project, which became one of the first companies to put this technology into service. It is also reported that Honda will be the first to equip its cars with such systems

The sensor uses an MC33794 chip connected to an array of antennas through a multiplexer. The signal is emitted at a frequency of 120 kHz, the voltage amplitude at the antenna input does not exceed 5 V. MC33794 chip is manufactured using Motorola SmartMOS process technology.
