MoSys Introduces 1T-SRAM-Q: Static Memory Density Could Be Four Times Higher
MoSys today unveiled its new static memory technology that achieves memory densities, up to four times higher memory densities in traditional designs. Accordingly, the name is deciphered quite simply: 1T – single-transistor, – static RAM and Q (Quad density) – quadruple.
The company notes that as the appetite for memory on mobile devices is constantly growing, it is necessary to find ways to reduce the size of memory cells. The first slide shows the relationship between the total area of logic elements on a chip and integrated memory in terms of the area of one single-transistor memory cell.
To further reduce the cell size, the company decided to use a capacitor folded in half so that it took up less space on the chip, but at the same time positioned it so that it did not interfere with the rest of the elements. At the same time, one more mask has to be used in the manufacturing process, but, according to the company, the total cost of production of 1T-SRAM-Q compared to 1T-SRAM will increase by no more than 5%.
The dimensions of one cell are of the order of 0.5 and 0.28 microns when manufactured according to 0.13 and 0.09-micron standards, which allows the production of 128 and 256-Mbit chips. The company expects its chips to be used in many mobile devices: digital cameras and camcorders, cell phones, laptop and pocket PCs.
