Intel: updated plans for 2021, Pentium 4 with 800 MHz FSB
According to the Japanese press, Intel has significantly updated plans for 2021, moreover, the changes affected both the plans for the release of processors and the plans for the supply of new chipsets.
We already talked about some changes in the company’s plans to release Pentium 4 processors with Hyper-Threading support in Saturday news (see. Intel Hyper-Threading Technology Development Plans). As it became known in addition, in the second quarter of 2021, Hyper-Threading technology will be supported by all new Pentium 4 processors.
In addition, the company decided to raise the FSB of new Pentium 4 versions with Hyper-Threading support up to 800 MHz. That is, chips with the previously announced FSB 667 MHz will not be presented at all, and for new systems with such processors, Canterwood, Springdale-PE and Springdale-G chipsets will be released. Another unexpected and important addition: new chipsets will support… DDR400!
So, in order. Intel plans to implement a broad policy of support for Hyper-Threading Technology from early 2021. To this end, the new Pentium 4 processors with HT support will be only marginally – about $ 15, more expensive than similar versions of processors without Hyper-Threading support. In other words, $ 15 is the price Intel charges for Hyper-Threading support and 800 MHz FSB. The first Pentium 4 chips with HT and 800MHz FSB will be 3.2GHz, 3.0GHz, 2.8GHz, 2.6GHz and 2.4GHz models expected in Q2.
It should also be noted that the release of chips with 90 nm Prescott core, previously planned for the second half of 2021, is now more precisely defined for the fourth quarter, plus it became known that these processors will also bypass the 667 MHz FSB and appear immediately with 800 MHz FSB.
It is quite obvious that processors with 400 MHz FSB will begin to gradually disappear from the scene as early as 2021. How long will the release of processors with FSB 533 MHz, but without Hyper-Threading last?.
Now about the new chipsets. Of course, the current line of Intel 845/850 chipsets will not be able to support 800 MHz FSB, and to switch to the new Pentium 4 with HT and 800 MHz FSB support, motherboards will also need to be replaced. Of course, synchronous operation of systems with FSB 800 MHz, where the reference frequency, respectively, 200 MHz and DDR400 memory with a base frequency of 200 MHz, is much more efficient than asynchronous options. In the case of dual-channel DDR400, the memory bus bandwidth can reach 6.4 GB / s. Perhaps this is why Intel made the decision to support DDR400. Moreover, it is unlikely that DRAM manufacturers will be ready for mass deliveries of DDR II in the volume required for the industry. Intel plans to switch to DDR II in 2021, when chips with Tejas core and 1066 MHz bus, as well as DDR II-533 memory appear.
Let’s go back to the line of new chipsets. Unlike the Canterwood chipset – a rather powerful logic set with the maximum set of functionalities, originally developed for single-processor workstations and high-end desktop PCs, the Springdale chipset with FSB 667 MHz support was positioned as logic for desktop PCs based on Pentium 4 / Prescott chips. with support for dual channel DDR. Now the Intel Springdale chipset family is represented by three modifications: discrete Springdale-PE and Springdale-P, as well as integrated Springdale-G. Unlike
Springdale-PE and Springdale-G, targeting support for DDR400 and new processors with 800 MHz FSB, Springdale-P will be used in systems based on current Pentium 4 chips with 533 MHz FSB and DDR333 memory.
