Mysticom Showcases 10Gbps Ethernet Transceiver for UTP Cable

At the Communications Design Conference, Mysticom showcased a new high-end Ethernet transceiver capable of transmitting and receiving data at 10Gbps over 25m Infiniband and 10m regular Category 5 UTP cable.

The Mysticom developers dream of achieving 10 Gbps speed on Cat 5 100m cable and the current transceiver is a step along the way, but admit that it will most likely not be possible with the current standard.

The Mysticom transceiver uses several 3.125 Gbps serial-to-parallel channels (serializer / deserializer or serdes) and the company believes that the longest distance still commercially viable for Cat 5 cables is less than 50 m. So, in future models of its transceivers, the company will focus on fiber-optic and Infiniband channels.
