64-bit processors for both desktop and embedded systems are expected to hit the next week with IBM’s first 64-bit PowerPC processor expected to be unveiled at the Microprocessor Forum. Rumor has it that this 1.8GHz processor will form the basis of new Apple Macintosh computers that may hit the market by the end of next year.
At the same time, several new products for embedded systems are planned to be announced this week: the 64-bit NEC microprocessor, which is positioned as a core for systems-on-a-chip, and the Tensilica architecture with 64-bit programmable instructions, although the core in Tensilica remains 32-bit.
