Fractal magnetic clusters as the basis for future carriers of information

Research and development of new magnetic materials capable of replacing the current ferromagnets began in industry almost immediately after the invention of information carriers using the effect of retention of residual magnetization.

Researchers at Ohio State University and the University of Utah report that they observed an interesting form of magnetization in polymers, characterized by a fractal. This means that the shape of complex polymer molecules, consisting of many monomer molecules, resembles the outlines of a three-dimensional fractal set.

Earlier this year, Arthur Epstein, director of the Ohio University Materials Research Center, and Joel Miller, professor of chemistry at the University of Utah, discovered the phenomenon of light-induced magnetism (photomagnetism) in polymers. Scientists have experimented with recently discovered materials and believe that they have discovered another amazing feature of them: on the nanoscale, the magnetization of such materials looks like a fractal set.

Without going into the details of the description of fractals and fractal sets, we will describe their main property in question: fuzzy boundaries, because of which, in some literature, fractals are called objects of non-integer dimension. If the volume of a body can be calculated by integrating in three-dimensional coordinates a function that sets its boundaries, then, of course, from the point of view of mathematics, there are restrictions on this function – it must be integrable. For bodies of arbitrary shape, it is possible to specify a piecewise-integrable function, and the calculation of the volume is reduced to integration in those intervals where there is an antiderivative. The problem with fractals lies in the fundamental impossibility of specifying a piecewise integrable function that describes the boundaries of the set.

Nevertheless, to determine the magnetization of a substance, it would be useful to know the volume of the regions that form the magnetic field. Using non-integer dimensions, one can describe the Epstein-Miller material, consisting of chains of tetracyanoethylene or tetraphenylporphyrin manganese, as having a dimension of 0.8 and 1.6. These dimensions were obtained by modeling the material during cooling after magnetization in an external electromagnetic field and a phase transition was observed: at a temperature of – 267 ° C, the magnetization corresponded to a dimension of 0.8, and at a temperature of – 269 ° C – 1.6.

Fractal magnetization is associated with the fact that electrons, which have a magnetic moment (spin) and determine the magnetization of the material, form a kind of fractal clusters with diffuse boundaries, the magnetization of which is ordered. Each such cluster can, in theory, be used to store a bit of information. And the observed change in magnetization with decreasing temperature, according to scientists, is associated with another property of fractals: the repeated repetition of its structure when changing scales. A decrease in temperature in this case played the role of a factor contributing to the appearance of new fractal clusters at the boundary of existing ones.
