Hewlett-Packard and EMC exchange courtesy of legal action

Hewlett-Packard and EMC sued each other yesterday for infringement of storage technology use rights.

Some analysts are of the opinion that HP, which filed the lawsuit first, thus planned to push EMC to the negotiating table to discuss several issues. However, it appears that EMC chose to negotiate in court and filed a counterclaim.

It is worth noting that the acquisition of Compaq in May helped strengthen its position in the storage market. Now the company’s biggest competitor is EMC, which is # 1 in this market.

HP’s lawsuit in the Northern California District Court accuses EMC of illegally using seven HP proprietary technologies in Symmetrix, Clariion and TimeFinder products. Some of the patents mentioned in the lawsuit are many years old and describe technologies for transferring data and recovering from backups in case of failures.

The number of patents that EMC accuses HP of infringement of the rights to use is slightly less – six. Basically, we are talking about technologies for copying data to remote media.
