IDC on Chipset Market: Times Are Tough for Taiwanese Firms

In the traditional quarterly report of the analytical company IDC, published recently, interesting data on the global chipset market appeared. So, in the second quarter, Intel strengthened its position and now the company’s market share is 59.6%, that is, increased by 2.6% compared to the previous quarter.

To some extent, the growth of Intel’s market share is associated with the promotion of new integrated chipsets, which is why large Taiwanese vendors such as VIA, SiS and ALi have to compete more intensively with each other.

But just a year ago, the situation was completely different. The share of Taiwanese chipset manufacturers was about 60%, of which 48% of the market belonged to VIA. In the same year in the second quarter, largely due to the ongoing litigation with Intel over the technological aspects of chipsets for Pentium 4, VIA’s share was only 22%. As for SiS, the company’s share increased by 1.5% compared to the same period last year.

At the same time, the majority of SiS products are the integrated SiS650 chipset, and since the cost of these chipsets is higher, and the percentage of finished products is lower, it is far from a fact that the company will be able to benefit from an increase in shipments.

In general, according to Digi Times, tough times have come for Taiwanese chipset developers: pressure from Intel will only increase. And the growing supply of integrated chipsets can and most likely will affect the graphics adapter market as well.
