AEON: Impinj non-volatile CMOS memory
Impinj announces that it has succeeded in creating a non-volatile memory that can be manufactured using a standard CMOS (CMOS) manufacturing process. The company claims that its memory, which uses mobile charge and valve manipulation technology, is easily programmable, operates at a fairly low supply voltage and can compete with flash memory in its cost.
Impinj called its memory AEON, which stands for advanced eternal on-chip non-volatile, or, if one may say, “improved eternal non-volatile memory on a chip.”. According to the company, AEON can be manufactured using CMOS process technology with 0.35-micron or 0.25-micron rates, without requiring any additional masks. Chip supply voltage – 3.3 V, power consumption while reading – 3 μW. Of course, AEON memory, contrary to its name, is not eternal – 0.25-micron and 0.35-micron chips are capable of storing information for no more than 10 years and provide up to 100,000 rewriting cycles. Currently, work is underway to qualify 0.18-micron and 0.13-micron standards.
The AEON technology, despite its advantages (no need for additional masks, and, as a result, low cost), has its disadvantages: low recording density. Currently, only 32 and 16 Kbit chips can be produced. Most likely, AEON will find its use as a memory for RFID transmitters, smart cards and other devices where low power consumption is required.
