Intel Announces Tunable Laser for Fiber Optic Communications

Continuing its foray into the telecom market, Intel announced plans to release a tunable laser for enterprise and backhaul networks.

I think it is not worth dwelling on the fact that in any area it is much more convenient to use a source of coherent light with a variable wavelength than several sources with a fixed wavelength. Let me just say that tunable lasers have been around for a long time and the approach to changing the frequency due to the thermal expansion of the cavity walls has been used for more than a dozen years. However, Intel managed to make such a laser rather miniature and at the same time quite powerful – the power of the tunable laser should be about 20 mW.

The laser is currently being tested in Intel labs and will be demonstrated at the Fiber Optics Communications Exhibition and Conference in March. It is expected that the mass production of the laser using the new technology will begin in late 2021 – early 2021.
