MMCA decides: the size of the MultiMediaCard will be even smaller

It would seem that flash cards of the MultiMediaCard standard are quite small in size, but at the last meeting of the MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) a standard was adopted describing flash cards that are identical throughout the MultiMediaCard, except for the size. The new cards, dubbed Reduced Size MultiMediaCards (RS-MMC), will be slightly larger than half of current MMCs and will be used primarily in cell phones.

Almost all MMCA members will produce and sell cards. It is planned to launch cards with a capacity of 16, 32 and 64 MB first on the market, and then bring the capacity of flash memory cards to 128 and 256 MB. The regular and RS-MMC have seven pins each and the reduced size cards can be used in devices already on the market.

The dimensions of the new cards will be 24x18x1.4 mm (the size of ordinary MMC-24x32x1.4 mm) and it is promised that they will be fully compatible with the current MMC slots using a simple mechanical filler, the method of using which is similar to the method of installing CompactFlash cards into a PCMCIA slot.
