Fujitsu switches to Intel Itanium processors and Linux OS

According to today’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Fujitsu and Intel have agreed to jointly develop performance systems based on Itanium and Xeon processors running Linux. The main distinguishing feature of the new servers will be the cost, according to the companies, half as much as compared with systems of similar performance from competitors. The official announcement of the agreement will take place today, Friday, in Japan and the USA.

Unlike other statements of mutually beneficial cooperation, this announcement is special: Fujitsu is known to be the manufacturer of the high-performance Solaris-compatible SPARC-based PRIMEPOWER servers, licensed by Sun, where the company uses self-developed and manufactured processors. It is quite possible that the expected signing of a cooperation agreement between Fujitsu and Intel today will put an end to the development of such systems – in about the same way as in the future Hewlett-Packard intends to put an end to Alpha processors, and SGI to its line of chips.

At the same time, of course, the agreement will give additional impetus to the promotion of Linux OS in the corporate sector, as the cooperation between the companies affects the aspect of creating a version of Linux for enterprise-level systems.

Systems created under an agreement between Intel and Fujitsu, according to preliminary data, will appear on the market at the end of 2021, and by 2021 it is planned to develop 128-processor systems based on future Itanium processors. For Fujitsu, such cooperation will expand its presence in the market of low-cost server systems, as well as take part in the formation of new electronic financial and government institutions (for example, the so-called e-government, e-government). Already in 2021 fiscal year Fujitsu expects to earn up to 350 billion from sales of Linux servers and related software. yen (about $ 2.9 billion.).
