STMicroelectronics takes part in the ALICE nuclear experiment

STMicroelectronics announces that it has begun production of the chip, which the company modestly calls “the most complex system-on-a-chip” (SoC). The STMicroelectronics chip, named ALTRO, is intended for use in research work, and to be precise, for the LHC collider currently under construction at CERN.

Each ALTRO chip contains 6 million. transistors, which form 16 low-voltage ADCs, DSPs and about 800 KB of memory, and in total 35,000 such microcircuits will be used in the ALICE experiment (A Large Ion Collider Experiment).

The ALICE experiment involves a group of universities and research institutes from over 40 countries. It is planned to study the radiation of hundreds of thousands of fragments scattering when two heavy nuclei collide at the LHC, so it was necessary to use such a large number of chips to process the results in real time.
