New Details on Rambus’ Speedy Redwood Interface

Rambus today unveiled additional details on its high-speed Redwood interface technology up to 6.4Gbps. For the first time, if you remember, this interface was talked about after in the very beginning of January Sony Corporation, SCEI (Sony Computer Entertainment) and Toshiba announced licensing of Redwood technology along with Yellowstone speed interface technology, presumably for use in the Cell project ( “supercomputer-on-a-chip” developed by IBM Microelectronics, which will be introduced into production with process technology standards of 0.10 microns or less. Sony intends to use the Cell architecture in its PlayStation 3).

As Rambus explained, the Redwood parallel interface technology will be implemented in the form of a special core, which manufacturers of processors and interface microcircuits will embed in their chips. The Redwood bus can be used as an interface connection between the processor and the northbridge, and the northbridge with the southbridge. In addition, the Redwood bus can be used to connect communication processors with the appropriate harness. In the consumer electronics sector, the Redwood bus can be used, for example, to connect HDTV decoders and processing processors in HDTV televisions.

Redwood technology is compatible with current industry standard protocols such as LVDS, HyperTransport, Rapid I / O and SDI-4. High speed of data exchange when using Redwood technology is achieved through the use of FlexPhase technology, previously announced by Rambus, which is a method of adjusting the bus data flow in which each contact of the chip receives a signal at a single moment in time. As far as can be understood from the comments presented, we are talking about the formation of delays in signal transmission, equal for each contact of the chip. According to company representatives, this will significantly reduce the production cost and power consumption of printed circuit boards, due to the fact that such a layout requires only a four-layer PCB design.

According to preliminary data, the Redwood core can be integrated into both BGA and CSP packages.
