VIA Apollo KT400A, officially
VIA Technologies has presented an updated version of what appears to be the latest chipset for the AMD K7 platform – VIA Apollo KT400A.
The new chipset, more precisely, its new version, is a solution with support for single-channel DDR memory – up to DDR400, and AMD Athlon XP processors with a rating of up to 3000+. The new chipset will come in two versions: KT400A + VT8237 and KT400A + VT8235CE. The use of the new VT8237 south bridge will allow motherboards based on this bundle to acquire support for Serial ATA (up to 4 devices), as well as eight USB 2 ports.0 (as opposed to six ports in previous versions of south bridges).
Briefly, here are the main characteristics of the KT400A: support for up to 4 GB of DDR200 / 266/333/400 SDRAM, the entire line of AMD Athlon XP and AMD Duron processors with FSB 200/266/333 MHz, the VIA Modular Architecture Platform initiative (V-MAP, implying electrical and contact compatibility with previous versions of the chipset), support for AGP 8X and so on. Communication between the KT400A and the VT8237 or VT8235CE southbridge is via 8X V-link with a peak throughput of 533 Mbps. Presumably, motherboards based on the new chipset will appear in the very near future.
