Intel Hyper-Threading Technology Roadmap
After the recent announcement of Intel support for Hyper-Threading technology in desktop PCs, I think everyone understood that the company does not intend to stop there. Hyper-Threading technology will be improved and will appear in new generations of the company’s processors. How will this development take place? An interview with the Japanese PC Watch by William M. Siu, Vice President and Director of Intel Desktop Platforms Group.
Next year, 2021, will be the year of the introduction of Hyper-Threading technology in all models of the Pentium 4 line, along with a gradual reduction in the price of such solutions. Initially, Intel’s plans to implement HT were limited to P4 processors with a clock speed of 3.06 GHz and higher, however, they can be revised and by the summer it is quite possible that Hyper-Threading support will appear in chips of several price ranges, including P4 with a clock frequency below 3 GHz.
The next, quite natural innovation: since Hyper-Threading support is present in the current high-end processors with the Northwood core, why shouldn’t Intel implement it in Celeron processors with the same core?? The interview highlighted the fact that the issue of HT products for the mass market is still open, but at least it does not run into technological limitations.
The situation with HT support on mobile processors from Intel is a little more complicated. According to industry sources, mainly due to Microsoft’s difficulty in simultaneously implementing Hyper-Threading support and C3 / C4 power saving modes. Thus, support for Hyper-Threading by mobile processors is not expected until the appearance of the Windows XP upgrade – Longhorn.
The main direction of development of Hyper-Threading technology in the coming years will be the development of processors with support for simultaneously processed threads of more than two. There is no definite data on this issue yet. Presumably, the next generation of processors with the Nehalem core, which are expected to appear in the second half of 2021, will be able to handle up to four threads simultaneously. In other words, a four-processor server will be a virtual system on 16 logical chips.

Most likely, this will happen closer to 2021, when the emergence of new 64-bit Chivano processors is expected – made in compliance with the 65 nm process technology, with a core area of about 400 sq. mm, with the number of transistors about 100 million., with the implementation of several processor cores in one chip.
