IBM PowerPC 970: New 1.8 GHz Processors for Apple Macintosh?

Today, at the Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, California, IBM Microelectronics engineers will unveil their new family of PowerPC-class chips – the PowerPC 970.

According to preliminary information, the architecture of the PowerPC 970 chip will be very close to the structure of the Power4 processor currently used by IBM in the Regatta servers. IBM representatives even call it “the light version of Power4”. However, the PowerPC 970 will have only one core (as opposed to two in the Power4), smaller size, run at higher clock speeds, will be less power hungry, and, most importantly, is intended for use mainly in desktop PCs and low-end servers.

Despite the fact that the new PowerPC 970 chip is 64-bit, with all the ensuing advantages of 64-bit memory addressing, etc., the processor can work without problems with modern 32-bit software, as part of systems running 32-bit operating systems such as Linux, Unix or Apple Mac OS X. At the same time, 64-bit addressing of the chip, by analogy with AMD’s Hammer processor family, will allow such processors to smoothly switch to 64-bit OS and applications.

Legal question: who will allow? Industry sources claim that the PowerPC 970 processors will be used in the next generation of Apple desktop PCs, although Apple representatives have not given any comments on this yet.

The use of such chips in new Macintosh is a rather tempting idea for Apple Computer, which has long been looking at 64-bit processors with interest. In addition to the advantages of 64-bit computing, Apple will receive chips with a clock speed of 1.8 GHz next year, if it continues to cooperate with IBM – this is exactly the frequency that the first PowerPC 970 processors will have. Moreover, in a short time, IBM intends to overcome the 2 GHz barrier, as well as provide more economical versions of the chip for use in laptops.

PowerPC 970 chips will initially be manufactured at IBM’s new East Fishkill, NY facility using 0.13 micron technology standards and SOI technology. In the second half of 2021, IBM plans to move production to 90 nm norms.
