Sharp 2D / 3D switchable LCD

Sharp Corporation announced the development of a new LCD display capable of displaying 3D images without the need for special glasses. An additional advantage of this design is that the same display can be used for ordinary 2D needs by simply switching from stereo mode (3D) to planar mode (2D).

New technology for creating a three-dimensional image is based on the so-called “parallax barrier” effect. When using the monitor in 3D mode, a parallax barrier sets some image displacement for the right and left eyes, which allows you to achieve a stereo effect. When operating in 2D mode, this barrier simply becomes transparent and has no effect on imaging. The illustration below gives some idea of the principle of operation of such a display.

Possible applications of such a display are quite extensive: PC monitors, LCD TVs, CAD / CAM systems, medical devices, advertising equipment, etc.P. The company especially emphasizes that the developed principle of displaying a three-dimensional image is applicable even with miniature displays that can be used as part of PDAs, organizers, e-books, gaming devices, etc. The company currently has prototypes for 4-, 7-, 8.4- and 15-inch panels.

The main research work in this area was carried out by the company in its Oxford laboratory Sharp Laboratories of Europe, England. The company’s specialists said that the technology is currently fully ready for commercial implementation and the first 3D displays will appear on the market in the spring of 2021. In the meantime, the company’s engineers will be working on improving the technology for creating a 3D effect, as well as increasing the viewing angle, at which it is possible to observe the stereo effect.

Sharp to showcase its 3D LCD displays at CEATEC Japan 2021, starting October 1 in Makuhari, a suburb of Tokyo. It is expected that on the basis of the new technology by the end of the year, a new consortium will be created to further develop and implement Sharp’s developments. Such companies as Microsoft, Eastman Kodak, Sony, Toshiba, Sanyo, Fuji Photo Film, Olympus, NTT Data and Imagica are already interested in membership in the new consortium.
