Two new DeskNote ECS models are designed to drive demand
ECS (Elitegroup Computer Systems) announces that it plans to release two new desktop processor-based notebooks – DeskNote – to stimulate shipments that have fallen short of previously expected levels.
Pentium 4 based 980 will target the clone market. The second model (number not given), based on Transmeta 907, will be focused on the budget models.
With the release of two new models, the company expects DeskNote shipments to grow to 50,000 units per month. The company currently only ships about 30,000 DeskNotes per month, according to ECS, while previously predicted to ship up to 100,000 of these devices per month.
According to ECS, the low level of supply is associated with not too active stimulation of demand by distributors who have taken a wait and see attitude – the product is relatively new and its market perception is still ambiguous. In addition, some European distributors point out that DeskNote’s after-sales service level should be comparable to laptop after-sales support, which means that they will have to add their services and increase the price, reducing the price benefit from using desktop processors that cost significantly less than special mobile processors.
To keep DeskNote’s market niche, ECS plans to regularly release new models to keep DeskNote at the same level as the desktop. In addition, the sales center for devices is slowly shifting from Asia to Europe and the United States. If earlier DeskNote deliveries to China accounted for more than 50% of all product deliveries, now – no more than 30-35%.
