Hall of the Unseen is a tricky little place, but you should be able to beat it around level 12ish, depending on gear. You get a really good one handed weapon. New 700 MHz MIPS processors R16000 from SGI
SGI presented its new MIPS-processors R16000 with a clock frequency of 700 MHz. Just like the chips of the previous version – R14000A, the new 64-bit 4-way superscalar R16000 processors with variable sequence of instructions have an associative 32 KB data cache and 32 KB instruction cache, 4 MB external L2 cache, work with the MIPS 4 instruction set.
The rest of the technical details about the new processor are still unknown. Perhaps the most interesting thing would be to find out the power dissipation of R16000. As you know, SGI has positioned low power consumption as one of the most critical aspects of the R1x000 series processors. Due to the fact that the 0.13 micron R14000A chip dissipated only 17 W at 600 MHz, it became possible to place 128-processor SGI Origin 3900 systems in a single rack.
Initially, the new R16000 chips will be shipped as part of SGI Fuel Visual Workstations equipped with VPro 3D graphics subsystem running IRIX OS.
According to data published by SGI, the company, like Hewlett-Packard with PA-RISC, in the future intends to curtail the development of its processors and move to the release of systems on 64-bit processors from Intel: its Itanium 2 SGI Origin systems will run Linux. However, SGI’s complete refusal to release its own processors will not happen so soon, at least last summer SGI presented plans for the development of the architecture of its MIPS processors until 2021 (see our July newsletter Plans for the release of MIPS servers from SGI).
