Eastman Kodak stops issuing OLED licenses

If you take a quick glance at the history of the development of the modern electronic industry, then quite often you can find that some technology or device developed by Western (or Japanese) companies and received mass distribution is so intensively replicated that its further production by companies becomes meaningless. One might rightly argue that the market is the market, and healthy competition is the key to the success of trade and our well-being, but Eastman Kodak felt that this principle should not be applied to its passive OLED technology and announced a temporary suspension of licenses for this technology in order to not intensify competition.

Kodak currently has 10 customers who have acquired a patent for OLED and the company felt that this is enough for now. Kodak’s customers include Taiwanese firms RiT Display, Teco Optronics and Opto Tech.

Things are quite different with active OLED-matrices, for which only SK Display expressed a desire to acquire a patent, and that is apparently only because this is a joint venture between Kodak and Sanyo, and a small North American vendor eMagin.

Thus, by discontinuing passive matrix licenses, Kodak likely plans to nudge future customers in favor of active matrix technology. This is confirmed by the fact that negotiations with AU Optronics are planned soon. However, it is rather difficult to predict how it will actually be, since, firstly, there is little interfering with replicating the technology of passive matrices to current customers, and secondly, very few people have managed to stimulate sales of their alternative products with such methods (we will not recall Microsoft).
