Sony’s new strategy: Cocoon and home appliances

Yesterday, Sony held a press conference at which it spoke about its new strategy for connecting home appliances with the Widely Stretched Web (free translation of the abbreviation WWW :). At the press conference, a network video recorder was demonstrated, capable of finding and recording TV programs, the genre of which is determined by the owner.

Devices that record TV programs on a hard drive are no longer a surprise. The trick is that Sony’s VCR, named Cocoon, could be an alternative way to access the Internet, according to the company.

According to Sony President Kunitake Ando, if earlier the strategy for the development of electronic devices for the home was built around the PC, now, with the advent of the broadband era, the company plans to focus on audio-video products and mobile terminals.

Cocoon VCR has a built-in 160GB hard drive that can record up to 15 hours of HDTV (High Quality Television) or up to 100 hours of regular quality. Capacity can also be doubled up to 320GB. The search for programs is carried out on the Internet, the selection and recording of programs is based on the criterion defined by the owner and consisting of up to 44 keywords. It is argued that the device can generate keywords itself by analyzing which programs the user prefers to write and if the user for some reason does not like the choice, he will apologize for his mistake :). It should be noted that all of the above requires a fairly high-speed Internet access. It should also be noted that Cocoon will not be a cheap toy: retail price will start at $ 1,110 (130,000 yen).

When Cocoon hits the market, Sony also plans to introduce a paid service that allows you to program your VCR from your cell phone. From November 1, this service is planned to be launched in Japan, then, if the experiment is successful, such a service is planned to be promoted in the USA and Europe.

A distinctive feature of Sony’s new strategy is the abandonment of Intel processors and the Microsoft operating system: unlike the Vaio PCs, which were previously the core of the company’s strategy, Cocoon will use microprocessors based on MIPS technology and Linux OS (it is strange, however, that the product turned out to be so expensive). Sony spokesperson says Cocoon uses more advanced video recording technology from TiVo. The following products will also integrate DVD recording and / or playback.
