IDF Fall 2021: Live From San Jose Press Conference On New Intel Banias Processor
Our correspondent, Alexander Medvedev, is currently at the Intel Developer Forum in San Jose, California. Perhaps for the first time we have such a unique opportunity: to provide a live real-time report from the scene of an event held in another hemisphere. As you remember, the conference organizers made sure that each forum participant had the opportunity to access the Internet directly during the IDF. For this, access points of two 802 standards were installed in the building of the San Jose Convention Center.11a and 802.11b, and cards were distributed to all participants to ensure uninterrupted internet access throughout the session.
It should be noted that the connection is really not interrupted for an instant, and all the time, while the press conference on the Banias processor is being held in San Jose, Alexander and I communicate without any problems via ICQ. For this, Intel used some “tricky” technological discoveries
- Banias processors support SSE2 instruction set!
- A special system of command execution is interesting, the principle is as follows: initially, packets of microinstructions are assembled, then they are run together, which additionally saves energy; the chip uses a special hardware function – something like a separate cache for the stack values that are most often used. Also has a significant impact on energy savings, according to Intel representatives
- The processor has a special microcode optimizer – Microcode Fusion. The principle of operation of Microcode Fusion is somewhat similar to AMD K7 – it also tries to combine several microinstructions into one
- Banias processor bus is fast, most likely based on QPB, similar to P4, optimized for energy saving
- The Banias processor will be available in two form factors: FCPGA and BGA (Surface mount), connectors are something very similar to Socket 478 in dimensions
- On the performance of the new chips: 1.3 GHz Banias is about 50% faster than 1 GHz Mobile PIII (unofficial data, based on MPEG4 encoding test)
- On security: laptops based on Banias processors will pay a lot of attention to data protection, since the chip offers great wireless connectivity. Data protection will be done in hardware, an embedded chip with a unique private key will be used. Accordingly, the user sets a password, as a result, a certificate is obtained using VeriSign technology, i.e.e. it becomes possible to implement digital signature or data protection. If the laptop is stolen, the information for hacking the data will not be enough, since there is also the second part of the certificate – the user’s password
- For systems based on the Banias processor, two chipsets are already ready – discrete and with integrated graphics (Oden and Montara?)
- The graphics core that Intel intends to use in the integrated chipset is similar to the 845GL, although much more economical
What else interesting has already been shown and told on the forum?
- Shown a prototype of the Prescott processor running at a clock frequency of 4 GHz. The processor was overclocked (without special cooling) to a frequency of 4.7 GHz, then the chip “hung”
