Motorola Announces New PowerQuicc II Family of Microprocessors, both Ethernet-only and Full-Featured Networked Devices, and Ready to Start Shipment of Sample PowerQuicc III Embedded Communications Processors. The new processors are manufactured according to the 0.13-process technology Motorola HiperMOS 7.0 and operate at clock speeds up to 450 MHz.

PowerQuicc II uses two embedded RISC cores: PowerPC G2, which acts as a network controller, and Communication Processor Module, to provide on-chip communications.

First chip, MPC8270, comes in a standard 480-pin TBGA form factor and is compatible with previous PowerQuicc MPC-8250 class. Asynchronous mode (ATM, asynchronous transfer mode) is not supported, but many other network functions are supported, there are three independent MII / RMII interfaces and 128 HDLC (high-level data link control) channels. The MPC8270 is available in 266, 333 and 450 MHz clock speeds for a variety of applications.
