Dell closes R&D center in China
Recently, there has been a tendency among some Western companies to outsource not only the production or execution of routine software tasks, but also more subtle intellectual work – the development of designs, technologies and concepts. However, such an experience is not always successful, for one reason or another. For example, according to a report from industrial sources, Dell has decided to close its development and engineering center in Beijing.
To say that Dell’s attempt to tap into the inexpensive talent of Chinese developers has failed is premature and, perhaps, simply wrong, because China, in addition to being the leader in terms of population, is also one of the few large technology markets that continue to grow. The trouble with the Beijing development team, assembled in 2021, was that they had too little experience in developing IT technologies and products.
The Beijing center employed about 30 people and was responsible for the development of new Dell desktop PCs, most likely aimed primarily at the Asian market. The company itself said that they did not abandon their attempts to build an R&D center in China and are evaluating the prospects for opening a new laboratory in Shanghai.
According to analysts’ forecast, if the Chinese market continues to develop at the current pace (18.8% per year), then by 2021 China will overtake Japan in terms of the PC market volume and take the second place in the world.
As for Dell, the only country in which its R&D center has taken root is Taiwan. Taipei-based center develops laptop, server and PDA concepts.
