As an alternative for future processors, Intel offers a 3D transistor

At the International Solid-State Devices and Materials conference, held in the Japanese city of Nagoya, Intel Corporation presented its new development: a three-gate transistor.

Gerald Marcyk, Intel’s director of component development, believes the three-gate transistor unveiled at the conference could be used in future 45nm chips expected by 2021.

The prototype of a three-dimensional transistor with three gates was created using the norms of the 130nm process technology and the length of its each gate is 65nm. The company claims that the three-dimensionality of the transistor made it possible to improve the current transfer by 20% and reduce the parasitic leakage current by several tens of times, which, by the way, is comparable to the improvement of this indicator for CD transistors (silicon dielectric or SOI, silicon-on-insulator).

According to Marchik, Intel, as well as other semiconductor chip companies, are looking for alternative ways to produce integrated circuit elements than those currently in use. At the same time, Intel is not going to completely abandon the development of conventional, “two-dimensional” transistors and has already demonstrated a prototype of a transistor with a 20-nm valve. However, when the developers figured out what the leakage current would be for a processor with 100-200 million. transistors, they were horrified and began to think of ways to reduce it.

One of the ways to reduce the leakage current, which the developers resorted to, was the use of silicon-dielectric technology (CD or SOI). But there is a problem: the level of a logical zero or one in such transistors depends on the thickness of the dielectric layer, and the optimal thickness is about 10 nm, and moreover, it should be uniform over the entire surface of the chip. By the way, Intel has already considered the possibility of splitting the chip into areas where variations in the level of a logical unit are possible.

Alternatively TSMC is going to showcase its horseshoe transistor omega FET, and several companies are going to showcase its FinFET. So we will wait for further developments.
