New DeskNote from ECS in the upcoming 2021

Looking back at the year that has passed since the so-called “desktops” appeared on the market, that is, PCs in the form of laptops, but on components for desktop computers, one cannot but admit a certain commercial success of this direction. Appearing as an alternative to laptops with their immeasurably more expensive processors and other mobile components, now the class of desktops has become a coveted purchase for many thanks to a compact portable design, with all the power of a desktop model, at a much lower price than the closest mobile analogue.

One of the most consistent players in the dexnot market, Elitegroup, according to reports from Taiwan, intends to update its lineup in the coming year. The DeskNote A900 and A901 PCs, according to preliminary data, will be replaced by the new models A907 and A980, the main difference of which will be the use of more modern components, greater ease of use of components, great upgrade options and a lower price.

Entry-level models (price $ 600) DeskNote i-Buddie A907 will replace the A900 series (at 733 MHz VIA C3 processors) and A901 (Intel Celeron) and will become the first DeskNote series models based on Transmeta Crusoe TM5600 integrated processors with 512 KB of L2 cache, integrated memory controller (PC133 SDRAM), with a performance level of 400 – 500 MHz Pentium III processors. The first model of the A907 series will be made on a chip with a clock frequency of 533 MHz, the subsequent ones – on 600, 633 and 667 MHz processors. The lower price threshold of the A907 series is promised at the level of $ 560 and even lower (of course, we are talking about barebones, without memory, hard drive, etc.). Full specifications of the A907 series models can be found here.

Unlike the A907 series, which does not have the ability to upgrade the processor, the DeskNote i-Buddie A980 series (has the ability to install new Pentium 4 chips with a clock speed of 2.26, 2.53, 2.8 GHz, FSB 533 MHz, and the A929 series (i-Buddie XP, full specifications – here) – Athlon XP. The A980 series will be based on the SiS651 chipset with SiS315 graphics, for which 16 – 64 MB of main memory are allocated, however, models based on NVIDIA GeForce4Go 420 with “own” 32 MB DDR memory will be released. The advantage of DeskNote models is the use of regular (non-SO-DIMM) memory modules, however, unlike the A907 series, which works with 168-pin PC133 SDRAM modules, the high-end A980 series supports 2.5 V 184-pin DDR33 SDRAM modules. A928 and A929 series (i-Buddie4, on Pentium 4 processors with 400 MHz FSB, full specifications – here) also work with 184-pin DDR SDRAM modules, however, they only support PC2100.

Another interesting feature of the A980 series models is the possibility of purchasing a version with a brighter 15-inch TTL LCD display, hitherto used mainly in LCD monitors. Of course, this will affect the weight and thickness of the model, plus, it will reduce the battery life if an external battery is used. However, the A980 series will also feature models based on traditional 15-inch LVDS “laptop” matrices. In general, Elitegroup plans for 2021 to expand the list of models with large screen diagonals.

The hard drives used in the new DeskNote models still have a 2.5-inch “laptop” factor, but now their replacement is reduced to unscrewing two screws and installing the device in a special compartment. Built-in V remains standard.90 56Kbps modem, 10 / 100Mbps LAN port and USB ports, built-in floppy drives and PCMCIA slots are a thing of the past, USB 2 ports appear in high-end A928, A929 and A980 series models.0 and IEEE1394.

Since the main quality of DeskNote models remains the use of desktop processors, the company still positions the presence of a battery only as an additional external option.
