Apple: hit the dominance of single-processor x86 with dual-processor desktops!

Apple Computer today announced new dual-processor desktop PCs based on PowerPC G4 chips with clock speeds from 867 MHz to 1.25 GHz.

New PCs are made using Xserve architecture, support up to 2GB DDR333 memory, some of them are equipped with graphics cards based on ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. A distinctive feature of the new Macs is also the presence of the freshest pre-installed Mac OS X 10.2 “Jaguar”.

All new dual-socket Power Mac PCs have two FireWire ports, four USB ports 1.one. In total, three systems were released:

The dual-socket system with a retail price of $ 1,699 includes:

  • Two 867 MHz PowerPC G4 processors with 256 KB L2 cache and 1 MB L3 cache
  • 256 MB DDR SDRAM
  • Graphics – NVIDIA GeForce4 MX (32MB DDR SDRAM), AGP 4x slot
60 GB Ultra ATA / 100 hard drive (7200 rpm)

  • Combo DVD-ROM / CR-RW drive

The dual-socket system with a retail price of $ 2,499 includes:

  • Two 1 GHz PowerPC G4 processors with 256 KB L2 cache and 1 MB L3 cache
  • 256 MB DDR SDRAM
  • Graphics – ATI Radeon 9000 Pro, 64MB DDR SDRAM, AGP 4x slot
80 GB Ultra ATA / 100 hard drive (7200 rpm)

  • SuperDrive DVD-R / CD-RW drive

The dual-socket system with a retail price of $ 3,299 includes:

  • Two 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 processors with 256 KB L2 cache and 2 MB DDR SRAM L3 cache
  • 512 MB DDR SDRAM
  • Graphics – ATI Radeon 9000 Pro, 64MB DDR SDRAM, AGP 4x slot
120 GB Ultra ATA / 100 hard drive (7200 rpm)

  • SuperDrive DVD-R / CD-RW drive

The first two Power PC models have already begun to go on sale through the Apple Store online, through Apple’s reseller network, the older 2 x 1.25 GHz Power Mac G4 is expected in the second half of September.

Yes fans of “apple” products will forgive me, but I could not resist such a caustic headline for one single reason: in fact, no one argues that dual-processor systems are, as a rule, “cooler” than uniprocessor ones. It seems to be inappropriate to argue here. However, on the company’s website, in the specifications of new products, I found the following test comparison results:

What do you think? It turns out that Dual Power Mac G4 “makes” the system on one 2.53 GHz P4 with one left! Like this, two for one… that, one by one, we are now afraid?
