DVD Forum has decided on the choice of a new DVD standard
The DVD Forum, a standard-setting organization, has decided to use 0.6mm disc technology in combination with blue lasers as the basis for the new DVD standard, proposed in the summer by NEC and Toshiba under the working title Advanced Optical Disk System. However, the forum does not intend to consider competing blue-laser technology promoted by the community of companies Blu-ray Consortium and has not yet been officially submitted to the DVD Forum.
Let me remind you that both new technologies were presented last summer. The format, promoted by NEC and Toshiba, will store four times more information on each disc than the current generation of DVDs. In this case, the new discs will use the same 0.6 mm disc blanks that are used in current DVDs, while the Blu-ray standard assumes the use of discs with a 0.1 mm layer. Despite the fact that the capacity of discs of the Toshiba-NEC standard will be slightly less than that of the discs of the competing format, one of the advantages is the lower production cost due to the use of existing lines for the production of current DVDs.
The concept of creating new optical systems from NEC and Toshiba using blue lasers is an evolutionary development of modern DVD systems. So, the numerical aperture of optical systems of new devices will be equal to 0.65, the new discs will consist of two 0.6mm plates glued together. Estimated capacity of the new discs is 20 GB per side for a single layer writeable disc and 15 GB per side for a read-only disc. For comparison: Blu-ray optical systems have a numerical aperture of 0.85, single-sided, single-layer disc capacity – 27GB.
