Intel and PSC form an alliance with Elpida
As we wrote yesterday, Elpida Memory is in the final stages of negotiations with Mitsubishi Electric on the acquisition of its DRAM division. It is possible that two more companies that cannot be called small in any way will join Elpida: Intel and PSC (Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation).
Cooperation between PSC and Elpida (a joint venture between NEC and Hitachi), will include both technology provision and contract manufacturing of chips. It is also possible to establish investor relations, partial consolidation of production facilities and joint development of technologies.
In addition, the Taiwanese Economic Daily reports that Intel is also going to take part in the joint work of Elpida and PSC. Intel is primarily interested in the company’s two 300mm factories, which will produce high-end DRAM chips.
It is curious, by the way, that Elpida plans to appoint the former president of the Japanese branch of UMC to the position of the head of the new company. This will be announced in Japan next week.
So how will the roles in this future alliance be distributed: Intel plans to set DRAM standards, Elpida’s 300mm Hiroshima plant will develop chips, and two 300mm PSC factories will continue to mass produce DRAM. Remaining 200mm factories will be used to manufacture other products under contract for Elpida and Intel.
Companies have differently commented on this post to Economic Daily. Intel declined to comment yet, PSC said the company has always looked for ways to expand its operations, but has no definite plans yet.
Some analysts have suggested that Intel may have to support the Japanese joint venture, even if the company is reluctant to do so, so that the global DRAM market is divided between two or three major players.
