PowerPC 970: new details from IBM

First unveiled by IBM Microelectronics in October at the Microprocessor Forum, the new PowerPC 970 processor has received significant press and industry coverage. No joke, for systems of the class of desktop PCs and servers of the low-end class, a 64-bit chip is being prepared, which is similar in structure to the Power4 processor used in IBM Regatta servers (PowerPC 970 will have only one core, unlike Power4’s two). In addition, the new processor will be able to work without problems with modern 32-bit software, as part of systems running 32-bit operating systems such as Linux, Unix or Apple Mac OS X. At the same time, 64-bit addressing of the chip, by analogy with AMD’s Hammer processor family, will allow such processors to smoothly switch to 64-bit OS and applications.
