Microprocessor Forum 2021: details about VIA Nehemiah and his descendants

At the Microprocessor Forum (MPF) 2021 conference, a detailed report was presented by representatives of Centaur Technology, a member of VIA Technologies. The day before yesterday we already talked about VIA’s approximate plans for the further release of its processors. However, at MPF 2021, more detailed roadmaps were presented, which are worth dwelling on.

Technological details about the Nehemiah (or C5XL) processor core were presented at the conference for the first time, samples of which with a clock frequency of 1 GHz are expected towards the end of the year. In 2021, VIA plans to raise the chip clock speed to 1.4 – 1.5 GHz. At the conference, the company demonstrated a working platform based on the VIA CLE266 chipset and the C5XL processor with a clock frequency of 1.13 GHz.

Representatives of the company also elaborated on the plans for the further development of the line of their processors. Now, at the end of 2021 – the beginning of 2021, the company plans to release a productive version of the C5X core – C5Z, with a clock frequency of about 2 GHz, a 22-stage pipeline, support for the SSE2 instruction set, a crystal size of 80 mm? and norms of 0.13 micron technical process; for the low-end market, an economical version of the C5X core – C5XP will be produced, plus a C5Y version with a new productive bus. In 2021, the release of integrated versions of the C5XL and C5Z chips is planned, in more distant plans, a mysterious chip with a vague name CN is already looming (probably, in the place of the letter “N” in time there will be another number), about which it is only known that it will be completely new architecture.

The new Nehemiah (C5XL) processor core is not something supernova, it is based on the architecture already known from the current C3 chips (C5N and Ezra-T). However, the changes in the core are still significant: the number of pipeline stages has been increased from 12 to 17, support for the SSE instruction set has been added, the floating point unit (x87), operating in the current C3 processors at half frequency, will now work in full frequency mode. In a word, the same architecture, but in a polished, brought to mind form.

According to company representatives, the C5XL processor core will contain 32% more transistors than the current C5N, however, the die size will be reduced from 56 mm? up to 52 mm?. VIA expects that the cost of production of a new core, if not lower, will at least remain at the same level.
