APAC IDF Fall 2021: new XScale processors, chip packaging technology and flash from Intel

At the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei, Intel introduced new XScale processors, new flash memory chips, and talked about multi-chip packaging technology.

The new chips are based on the technology of “single-chip systems” – system-in-a-package (SIP), based on the method of multi-level packaging of flash memory – multi-level-cell (MLC).

By the end of 2021, the company intends to introduce a fully integrated Manitoba chip in the XScale family, which will include flash memory, a DSP processor and an XScale PXA core.
Intel today announced two new processors, the PXA261 and PXA262, which include the XScale PXA250 RISC core and Intel StrataFlash. Intel’s first SIP processors are packaged in a 13 x 13 x 1mm chip-scale package (CSP).
The Intel PXA261 chip, consisting of a 200 MHz XScale PXA250 core and 16 MB of flash memory, will be shipped at a price of $ 36.10 per unit in bulk (from 10 thousand) quantities. The Intel PXA262 chip, consisting of a 300 MHz or 200 MHz core and 32 MB of flash memory, will cost wholesale customers $ 54.60 and $ 62.60, respectively.

In addition, the company announced images of the new 1.8 V StrataFlash Wireless Memory, manufactured using the 0.13 micron process technology (this is the memory used in the new integrated XScale processors). The previous generation of StrataFlash chips had a 3.3V supply and were manufactured using a 0.18 micron process. New 64 Mb, 128 Mb and 256 Mb StrataFlash chips will hit the market in bulk in the second quarter of next year. Samples of chips with a capacity of 128 Mbit are already available at a price of $ 17.75 per unit in quantities of 10 thousand pieces; chips with a capacity of 64 Mbit and 256 Mbit will appear at the very beginning of 2021.
