Intel Xscale PXA255: new version of the chip for pocket PCs
New chip for Xscale series Pocket PCs will begin shipping soon, according to Pocket PC Thoughts, already confirmed by Intel officials.
According to the data presented, Intel intends to release the XScale PXA250 chip with a new C1 stepping, however, along with the errors of the previous version, significant changes have been made to the core, plus additional functionality has been added.
Here is a list of the new / enhanced features of the PXA255 processor:
- Universal hardware asynchronous transceiver HWUART
- SDRAM Register Configuration for Low Power Mode
- 400 MHz / 200 MHz PxBus mode
- Core Clock Configuration Register (CCCR)
- Core Phase Locked Loop
- UDC Control Function Register (UDCCFR)
The changes in the core were so significant that the company decided to give the PXA250 C1 stepping a new name. It was originally thought to be the PXA255, but the final marketing name for the chip will be announced by Intel towards the end of the first quarter. In the near future, a document with a detailed description of the new chip is expected to appear on the company’s website.
The main improvement that will be made to the XScale PXA255 will be an improved processor performance due to the twice increased PxBus frequency – from 100 MHz to 200 MHz, with which the chip interacts with external devices, including memory. In addition, the XScale PXA255 is expected to consume less power in all modes. At the same time, the clock frequencies of the new version will remain the same as those of the PXA250 – 200 MHz, 300 MHz and 400 MHz. According to preliminary data, the wholesale price of the new chip will remain at the level of previous versions.
