IEEE ISSC: NEC Introduces 50.2 Billion Parallel Processor. MIPS

At the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits conference, which began yesterday, NEC Corporation reported on the development of a single-chip parallel processor designed to solve pattern recognition problems. The processor commits 50.2 billion. operations per second, which is about four times more than a 3-GHz processor in a PC, while consuming no more than 10% of the electricity needed to feed a 3-GHz pet.

The 11-mm chip is manufactured according to 0.18-micron standards, in a standard CMOS technical process and contains 32.7 million. transistors. The parallel architecture of the chip consists of 128 eight-bit RISC processors and one 16-bit RISC processor acting as a controller. Each of 129 processors is clocked at 100 MHz and equipped with 2KB cache memory.

The processor was originally intended to enhance existing pattern recognition systems using general purpose processors, DSPs, ASICs, or FPGAs. However, when the company came to the conclusion that it was advisable to create its own processor architecture, NEC created a chip, the microprocessor blocks of which provide line-by-line parallel image processing. And although the software is written in a fairly high-level language – C, and not assembly language, the company claims that this has little effect on the level of performance.
